Big Judgement Day: T20 World Cup shift to be officially announced on Monday, IPL 2021 Dates & Schedule coming out post the announcement

ICC T20 World Cup: Not COVID but not getting tax exemption reason for moving T20 WC to UAE, says BCCI member; Sourav Ganguly, Jay Shah

ICC T20 World Cup Judgement Day: Less than 24 hours to go for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take a call on the venue of ICC T20 World Cup. But as per reports and information available with InsideSport, the BCCI is all set to move the mega ICC event to the UAE having done the same for IPL 2021 Phase 2 after ICC gave the Sourav Ganguly-led board time till June 28. On Monday, the BCCI is expected to announce that the T20 World Cup will be moved to the UAE and Oman that will take place between October 17 and November 14. With that, BCCI will also release the fixtures for IPL 2021 in UAE, set to take place between September 17 to October 10.

On Saturday, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah told ANI that the board is mulling moving the ICC T20 World Cup to the UAE due to the COVID-19 situation in the country. Earlier, the board cited the monsoon for moving the IPL 2021 Phase 2.

“Due to the COVID-19 situation in our country, we may shift the tournament to UAE. We are monitoring the situation closely, the health and safety of players are paramount we will take a final call soon,” Jay Shah told ANI.

The ICC T20 World Cup 2021 was originally scheduled to take place in Australia with India hosting the 2022 edition. But with the Australian government’s COVID-19 restrictions, the ICC gave BCCI the hosting rights of 2021 edition and 2022 to Australia. Initially, BCCI kept nine venues across nine cities on standby to host the tournament. But the 2nd wave of COVID-19 poured cold water on BCCI’s plans. The IPL 2021 had to be suspended after 29 matches and the tournament was later moved to the UAE. However, June 28 will not only be a crucial day for ICC T20 World Cup but also the IPL 2021 Phase 2. InsideSport takes a look at crucial decisions that will be made public on Monday.

ICC T20 World Cup and IPL 2021 Judgement Day:

  • ICC T20 World Cup: BCCI to officially announce moving ICC T20 World Cup to the UAE due to potential COVID-19 crisis in India during October-November as scientists have predicted a third wave of the pandemic.
  • Tax exemption issue: BCCI is yet to offer any clarity on whether it has been able to successfully negotiate a tax exemption for the T20 World Cup for ICC. However, given the financial situation in the country due to COVID-19, the government is unlikely to issue even a partial exemption to the tournament. That perhaps has been the death nail in T20 World Cup’s future in India. BCCI is expected to make an official announcement in this regard.
  • IPL 2021 Phase 2: Moving the T20 World Cup and ICC announcing the dates would also help the BCCI to concentrate on IPL 2021 Phase 2 dates. While many BCCI officials have come up with potential dates, the board is yet to announce anything officially. Moving the T20 World Cup will clear the way. An announcement on IPL dates will be made shortly after the announcement on World Cup.

  • Foreign players’ availability: A decision on the foreign players’ availability is unlikely to be made as the board is still trying to convince other cricket boards to release players for IPL in UAE. While ECB and BCB have already refused to give NOC to players to play in the IPL, BCCI is still trying to convince Cricket Australia and other boards including New Zealand Cricket. As per reports, Kiwi cricketers have already made themselves available, although the NZC hasn’t announced anything officially while Cricket Australia has hinted that players could be unavailable due to a tri-series. BCCI is expected to announce an update on the matter.
