Alaves could have taken the lead through Joselu when his late header flew wide, but it was Barcelona who snatched the points when Frenkie de Jong turned in Torres’ selfless squared pass. Mendez missed a late chance to equalise, but the visitors held on for an important win. The result means that Barcelona climb to fifth, while Alaves remain precariously in 19th.

Barcelona dominated possession but the best chance of the first half fell to Alavés midfielder Pere Pons. However, he could only shoot straight at Marc-André ter Stegen.

The visitors then had a great chance to open the scoring in the 64th minute, but Luuk de Jong volleyed straight at the goalkeeper from five-yards out having been found by a Pedri cross.
The next chance also fell to De Jong in the 70th minute, but his header went harmlessly over the bar after a set-piece delivery into the box from his namesake Frenkie. Alavés then went close when Jason picked out Joselu with a cross into the box, but his header went just wide.
The breakthrough finally came in the 87th minute, when Jordi Alba’s cross found Ferran Torres, who squared for Frenkie de Jong to slot in from close range. That victory leaves Xavi’s side fifth in LaLiga and just one point behind Atlético Madrid.
