BAN vs SL: BCB promises to increase bio-bubble vigilance after 3 members of Sri Lankan contingent test positive for COVID-19

BAN vs SL: BCB promises to increase bio-bubble vigilance after Chaminda Vaas, Isuru Udana and Shiran Ferrando tested positive for COVID-19

BAN vs SL: Hours before the 1st ODI between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Dhaka, the match was in jeopardy after three members of the visiting team tested positive for COVID-19. It appeared that Sri Lanka’s bowling coach Chaminda Vaas, Isuru Udana and Shiran Ferrando returned positive RT-PCR tests. However, Udana and Vaas’ 2nd PCR result came negative, indicating a false positive case. As for Ferrando, he again tested positive with all three members kept in hotel isolation. The match went ahead anyway. But Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan has promised to increase vigilance after the incident.

“We are following the protocol and we feel nothing serious happened that we need to panic. It can happen at times someone testing positive but there is a protocol in place… what we need to do and how many times we need to do the test to make sure that he is negative. But definitely, we will increase our vigilance,” Nazmul Hasan said.

BAN vs SL: Shiran Fernando, who missed out on the match after returning two positive tests, had contracted the virus earlier and that might have hindered the test result. The RT-PCR test could have detected dead-virus fragments, resulting in a positive test.

“Shiran Ferrando recovered from Covid very recently, the PCR may have detected the dead RNA from the virus, many individuals have it on them up to 28 days,” Nazmul Hasan said.

BAN vs SL: However, there were reports that the touring Sri Lanka team was not happy with the bio-bubble arrangements and safety, indicating multiple breaches. As per an ESPNCricinfo report that has now been updated the contingent even talked about returning home as they will be touring UK in a few days’ time.

However, with the negative test results, their fears have been put to bed and the series will continue as scheduled. Sri Lanka team manager Manuja Kariyapperuma said that the team was happy with the arrangements.

BAN vs SL: “The facilities offered to us are good, that are more than adequate, and we made use of the facilities that were afforded to us, and looking forward to a very good series,” Kariyapperuma told Cricbuzz.
