BAN vs AUS 3rd T20: Australia’s Nathan Ellis takes a hat-trick on debut, becomes first to do so in T20I history

Australia fast bowler Nathan Ellis had a debut to remember as he became the first to take a hat-trick on his T20I debut in the third T20 against Bangladesh in Dhaka. Ellis was awarded his cap earlier this evening and had a day to forget, before hitting his lengths in the final over to scalp wickets in three successive deliveries to etch his name in the record books. He is the Australian bowler to do so, with Brett Lee and Ashton Agar having done so earlier.

Bangladesh vs Australia: Nathan Ellis was drafted into the XI in place of Mitchell Starc, who handed him his debut cap ahead of the BAN vs AUS 3rd T20. Heading into the final three balls of the innings, Ellis got the better of Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah, with a sensational full delivery that castled him. The 26-year-old old followed it up with a slower ball to Mustafizur, who tried to slog but could only find Ashton Agar at deep midwicket. Ellis completed the proceedings with yet another slower ball, as Mahedi Hasan also finding Agar in the deep to gift Ellis a piece of history.

BAN vs AUS 3rd T20:  Ellis was named as not originally named in Australia’s 18-man original squad for the limited-overs tours of the Caribbean and Bangladesh. He was part of the two travelling reserves but got into the side after fellow paceman Riley Meredith suffered a side strain. The 26-year-old’s call-up comes after establishing himself as one of the Big Bash League’s leading death bowlers for the Hobart Hurricanes.

He also impressed the coaching staff with his training ethic, which prompted them to hand Ellis a debut. Thanks to Ellis’ hat-trick, Australia restricted Bangladesh to 127/9 in their 20 overs. The game is a must-win clash for Australia, having lost the two previous games to Mahmudullah’s side.
