Earlier, the Sports Minister had said that Serbian star cannot take part at Roland Garros under a new law to exclude non-vaccinated players from stadiums, restaurants, bars, etc.
The vaccine pass is not restricted to vaccination. As per a new law on Monday, anyone who tested COVID positive for the last six months is exempt from showing vaccine pass. The development means Novak Djokovic can take part in French Open slated to take place in May-June, the year’s second grand slam. He had tested positive for COVID in mid-December.
French Open organisers had previously said that it’s too early to comment on the condition of anonymity. Djokovic too has decided to stay away from making public statements until the end of the Australian Open.
The French Sports Ministry was unavailable for comment.
Novak Djokovic is currently level with Swiss Tennis Maestro Roger Federer & King of Clay Rafael Nadal with 20 Grand Slam. He can go past Nadal & Federer at French Open subject to Nadal’s performance at the Australian Open. Djokovic had clinched the title at Roland Garros by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas & Nadal last year.
Besides French Open, Djokovic is welcome at Wimbledon which takes place straight after the French Open. Meanwhile, uncertainty looms over his participation at US Open where he failed to complete Calendar Grand Slam.
