Andre Russell had come to the tournament in a terrible form struggling with injury. But what an occasion it was to hammer a six. With West Indies losing a settled Kieron Pollard with the score reading 145/7, Russell went all guns blazing in the last three balls.

In fact, the 111m-long six was his first of the T20 World Cup 2021 and he hit that swiftly, pulling Starc to send that straight to the grassy lawn. And then again, he hammered the Aussie quick on the long on off a full-toss to take West Indies to 157. His 7-ball 18 was the highest for him in this tournament as West Indies confirmed their exit with a loss against Sri Lanka in the last match.

While it was a monstrous hit, it is by no means the longest in the world. That record belongs to Jacob Oram, who hit an other-worldly 130m six against Australia back in 2005. Apart from him, former Pakistan star Shahid Afridi had hit a 130m six at WACA, Perth off an Andrew Symonds delivery in the Tri-series in 2004-05. However, it was not officially approved as the longest six. Former India skipper MS Dhoni also has one of the longest sixes to his name when he hit a 118m six at Christchurch against New Zealand.

As for the match, thanks to Andre Russell’s two sixes, West Indies set a 158-run target for Australia. With West Indies already out, they are out to spoil Australia’s party as Australia will need to win to keep their hopes of semifinals alive. A loss will mean, they will have to depend on the other match of the day. They have to hope England beat South Africa by a good margin so that they go through on better NRR.
