United were without Luke Shaw and Jadon Sancho through illness, while there was still no mention of Cristiano Ronaldo in the squad. Anthony Martial almost opened the scoring after just four minutes after carving out a great position to shoot, but fired his shot over the bar.
The Reds went in at half time at 0-0, as they failed to penetrate Atleti’s steadfast defence. Christian Eriksen made his United debut in the second half but the Dane was unable to inspire a breakthrough.

And then in the dying minutes, Atlético substitute João Félix netted the winning goal with a lovely finish on what was his first appearance of pre-season. Things then went from bad to worse for United when Fred was sent off for a second bookable offence in stoppage time.
United are in action against Spanish opposition again on Sunday when they take on Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford, while Atlético face Cádiz in a friendly on Thursday.
