So far in this campaign, ATK Mohun Bagan has gone hot and cold. They began with a disheartening 1-2 loss to Chennaiyin before rebounding with a fantastic 5-2 triumph over Kerala Blasters. East Bengal, on the other hand, got off to a bad start. They were defeated 1-3 by Kerala Blasters, followed by a 1-2 loss to Goa. The Torchbearers have now made a return, winning 3-1 over NorthEast United in their most recent encounter.
East Bengal FC head coach Stephen Constantine is looking forward to Saturday’s Kolkata derby against ATK Mohun Bagan. Constantine, who has seen many Kolkata derbies from afar as the head coach of the Indian national side, has lauded the event as the largest in Asian football and believes it is on par with some of the world’s biggest footballing derbies. Coming off a victory, Constantine is hopeful his team can put their best foot forward and break their losing streak in the Kolkata derby.

Speaking to the media ahead of the clash, he shared his mind on the grand encounter. He said:
“The Kolkata derby is the biggest game in the Indian football calendar and it’s a special game. We are excited about facing ATK Mohun Bagan. They are a good side and we are expecting a very tough game and we will try to take the points. We are here to win football games. It’s a derby and your form goes out of the window. We have had a good week of training and we expect us to give a good account of ourselves on Saturday.”

“I remember the first time I saw the Kolkata derby in Kolkata. There weren’t enough seats to fit the people inside the stadium. It was an unbelievable atmosphere. It is one of the biggest derbies in the world. You put it up there with Arsenal-Tottenham, Rangers-Celtic, AC Milan-Inter Milan. It’s our derby and the biggest derby in Asia for sure. I would have loved to have played in it but I will take coaching in it obviously this is my second derby and I am looking forward to my first win in the derby on Saturday.” he added.

East Bengal has had a rough stint in derbies. Ever since their inception in the Indian Super League, the side has failed to win any of the four games. It will be an uphill task for Stephen constantine to change the course. Resonating on the challenges the coach was quoted saying:
“I always say that my next job is the most challenging and the Kolkata derby is my next job. East Bengal FC haven’t been where it should be in the last few years and my job is to make sure we are in a better place. We are trying to lay the foundations for that. This doesn’t happen overnight. I am very happy with the way we have reacted to the way I want to play football. I hope that continues. it’s a big challenge but hopefully, I can rise to this challenge and take East Bengal FC to a better place.”
“You can play the derby out on the street, outside the supermarket, it will still be the derby. It doesn’t matter when it comes. When it comes it will be there. You can’t back away, you can’t hide. We will give a good account of ourselves. We can’t control when it comes. We are ready for it”.

Both East Bengal and ATK Mohun Bagan head into the game soaring high on wins. The last time these two teams met was in Durand Cup. The game ended in a narrow 1-0 win for the mariners. It was a Sumeet Passi howler that resulted in the loss. However the game was rather lacklustre. Talking on how the team have upheld themselves since then Constantine stated:
“I think we have made a tremendous improvement since the last Kolkata derby. I think we are a better team than when we played them in the Durand Cup. Of course, it’s league points and also the question of the bragging rights that go with the Kolkata derby and I’m conscious about the fact that we haven’t won the Kolkata derby for 8-9 matches, so we will try and fix that on Saturday.”
“I am not interested in one point and I want all three. You don’t go into the derby game, not trying to win it. I think it’s important to highlight that. Everyone wants to win it, the staff, the players and the fans on both sides want to win it. That’s why we play it.” he concluded.
