It is important to mention here that Kohli has batted at number three mostly in his international career. So this is a big statement from Kaneria, who wants Kohli to bat at number four.
“Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul will open. But I would put Suryakumar Yadav at No. 3 and then followed by Kohli. Kohli will need some time to settle-in and play carefully so I think he should bat at No.4,” Danish Kaneria said in his YouTube video.
But, with the way things have gone in the last year or so, it does make sense for the Mumbaikar to bat at number three. Suryakumar has been one of the most in form players for Team India.
More importantly, he has the ability to play in any situations. He does not take time to settle in. If required, he can go after the bowling from the word go. Compare that to Kohli, who takes his time to get an eye in.
Also, the Indian team has gradually started to play an aggressive brand of cricket these days in the shorter format. The batters in the top order are not wasting much balls, and making full use of the field restrictions. The same is followed in the middle order. It is at this juncture Kohli needs to change his approach somewhat.

However, having Suryakumar come in to bat at number three, things can be a tad easier as he can up the tempo. A fine start from the top order can ease pressure off Kohli, which in turn could get the best out for the former India captain as well.
