Ardent hockey promoter Odisha CM orders astro turfs for all blocks in Sundargarh

Odisha Chief Minster Naveen Patnaik is an ardent hockey promoter. The biggest supporter of hockey, the State of Odisha will now have astro turfs in all the blocks in the Sundargarh district.

All set to host the FIH 2018 Men’s Hockey World Cup at the Kaliga Stadium in Bhubaneswar from November 28 to Dec 16, the State of Odisha is also the official sponsor the men’s and women’s national hockey teams in India.

The State Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has now announced that astro turfs will be established in all blocks of Sundargarh district in recognition of its contribution to hockey and to promote the sport.

“Probably, Sundargarh will be the only districts with largest number of astro turfs in the country. And will continue to produce world class players who will play for the country,” the Chief Minister said during an exhibition hockey match series which Odisha XI won

In recognition of the Sundargarh district’s contribution towards hockey, astro turfs will be established in all the blocks of the district, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced.

Hailing Sundargarh as the cradle of hockey in India, the CM said that Sundargarh and Rourkela have produced remarkable sports persons, who brought laurels for the State and the country both vat national and international level sports events.

Probably Sundargarh will be the only district with largest number of astro turfs in the country and will continue to produce world class players who will play for the Country, said the CM.

The chief minister said Odisha was also the only State to have its own hockey team – Kalinga Lancers – in the Hockey India league. Kalinga Lancers which also won the champion trophy in the last edition.

Lauding Odisha’s contribution to hockey, Patnaik further added that Odisha has also played host to the top-level international tournaments like Champions Trophy, Hockey World League final. Next comes the biggest of them all the FIH 2018 Men’s Hockey World Cup.

“We are also the proud organisers of the Hockey Men’s World Cup 2018 and we hope to successfully conduct the whole event”, he remarked.

Mr Patnaik said is the only state which sponsors a National team and sponsoring the Hockey National teams for the next five years. He further said a High Performance Centre for Hockey will be established in Bhubaneswar shortly.
