India Women’s Cricket Team Coach: India’s former wicketkeeper-batsman Ajay Ratra is the latest to apply for the India women’s cricket team job. As per reports, Ratra, who is currently the assistant coach of IPL franchise Delhi Capitals has put his hat in the fray for the top job. Earlier, Sulakshan Kulkarni and Ramesh Powar had also applied for the job.
Ajay Ratra, 39, had coached Assam in the last domestic season and Punjab in the past as well after retiring from playing cricket. He has also been associated with the India women’s cricket team’s fielding and wicketkeeping coach.
India Women’s Cricket Team Coach: Ajay Ratra played six Tests and 12 ODIs for India. During India’s 2002 tour of the West Indies, he became the youngest wicketkeeper and the second to score a century in overseas conditions. However, with Kulkarni and WV Raman (current women’s team coach) also in the fray, it will not be a cakewalk for Ratra.
“Having coached so many teams successfully, I’m confident that I will take the Indian women’s cricket team forward,” Kulkarni told Times of India.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted an advertisement for the head coach’s role after WV Raman’s contract expired. While his contract expired in October 2020, he was asked to continue due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Raman’s last assignment was against South Africa at home.
As per BCCI’s advertisement, the selected candidate will have to work with the women’s national team, India Women’s A and U-19 teams. Before the team travels to England in June for a one-off Test, 3 ODIs and 2 T20Is, the coach selection must be done.
BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), headed by Madan Lal and comprised of RP Singh and Sulakshana Naik will pick the coach through an interview process that will be conducted soon.
India Women’s Cricket Team Coach: The selection committee had emailed BCCI urging to appoint a female in key positions in India women’s team.
It is notable that Purnima Rau was the last female coach for Indian women’s till April 2017.
As per a report from ESPNCricinfo, Hemlatha Kala, Nooshin Al Khadeer, Jaya Sharma, Mamatha Maben, Suman Sharma are among the leading female candidates in the race for the top job.
