AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024: At its sixth meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Competitions Committee chose Qatar to host the AFC U23 Asian Cup in 2024. The Committee, under the direction of Chairperson Dr. Tran Quoc Tuan, also commended the majority of AFC Member Associations (MAs) for gathering tremendous momentum and staging a respectable recovery from the COVID-19 epidemic. As a result, the Committee decided to recommend to the AFC Executive Committee that the Special Rules Applicable to AFC Competitions During the COVID-19 Pandemic be discontinued beginning in 2023 given the decreasing impact of the pandemic across Asia.Members of the Committee acknowledged the difficulties that some participating MAs and clubs are still having navigating due to the many complications brought on by the epidemic.

In this vein, the Committee acknowledged that Changchun Yatai FC and Shanghai Port FC’s withdrawals from the AFC Champions League 2022TM were due to instances of force majeure. Similar to how MUST CPK’s departure from Macau from the AFC U20 and U17 Asian Cup 2023 Qualifiers was acknowledged as the result of cases of force majeure in the AFC Cup 2022TM, so was the withdrawal of Shan United FC and Hantharwady United FC from Myanmar.

The suggestion to implement a uniform strategy to synchronize all AFC competitions with the AFC Asian CupTM in regards to the cancellation of single cautions (that have not resulted in an expulsion) from the qualifying stage was also agreed by the Committee. This indicates that in order to maintain balance for all teams in the Finals, such warnings won’t be carried over to the finals stage. The modified competition rules for the AFC U20 Asian Cup 2023 and AFC U17 Asian Cup 2023 reflect this strategy, and the rules for other tournaments will be updated in due course.
